Dodgers deadline acquisitions struggling on the mound so far
The Los Angeles Dodgers are spinning their tires a little bit at the moment, having lost six of their last 10, and their trade deadline pickups aren’t doing much to help the cause.
The Dodgers were aggressive at the deadline and made headlines as part of a three-team, 13-player trade with the Braves and Marlins. The deal most notably netted the Dodgers starting pitchers Mat Latos and Alex Wood, and relievers Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan.
The early returns have not been good, as True Blue L.A. points out:
“The numbers have been so spectacularly bad that I just wanted to chronicle the combined numbers for the quartet to date, just for posterity sake more than anything:
35.1 innings, 48 hits, 35 runs, 34 earned runs, 15 walks, 33 strikeouts, 8.66 ERA, 1.783 WHIP, 4.49 FIP.
Opposing batters are hitting .322/.391/.497 with five home runs and nine doubles in 169 plate appearances (the batting average on balls in play is .381 if you are searching for a silver lining).”
To put those numbers into perspective, here’s what fellow Dodgers starter Zack Greinke has done this season:

On Thursday night, the Reds beat up on Latos, tagging him for five runs (four earned) in just 4.2 innings. Avilan came in and gave up three more earned runs in just two-thirds of an innings.
The numbers for the new guys come with a bit of a small-sample size warning, but the Dodgers and their fans will certainly be hoping for an improvement soon. The Dodgers’ lead atop the NL West division has shrunk to 2.5 games over the Giants.
Wood gets the start on Friday night, his first at Dodger Stadium, in the second game of their weekend series with the Reds.
