The Redskins struggled all season posting a lousy 4-12 on the regular season. They were just as unsuccessful against the spread with a 5-11 record. It seemed that Washington just couldn’t win a game at home only covering the spread twice in 8 games. They didn’t fare much better on the road covering only 3 games of 8 in the regular season. The OVER/UNDER didn’t add any funds to their backers either going 7-8-1 on the posted line.
The Washington Redskins had a horrible season last year going 4-12 straight up. Their offensive numbers don’t back up that picture as they were ranked 13th overall in offense. The Redskins offensive managed to put up an average of 358.6 yards per game, their pass yards rating was 13th in the league putting up 278.8 yards per game, while their running game ranked 8th overall managing 105.7 yards per game. The Redskins managed an average of 18.8 points per game putting them 26th in the league in scoring.
Washington’s poor defense was ranked 20th in the league allowing an average of 357 yards to their opponents per game. Their pass defence gave up an average of 264 yards per game while their run defense handed their opponents an average of 107.6 yards per game. Overall Washington gave up an average of 27.4 points per game putting them in the bottom quarter of the league at 29th position.
The Cleveland Browns had a tough season going less than .500 on the season in game wins with a 7-9 record. They were a little better for the Dog Pound backers offering a profitable 9-6-1 against the spread record. Although they went an even 4-4 against the spread at home but they were a little more successful on the road with a 5-2-1 record for the regular season. Cleveland had a pretty successful defense last year so backer who took the UNDER would have seen a profit with their 5-11 total record.
Although Cleveland had a more successful season on the scoreboard the offensive numbers aren’t as strong as their opponents this week. Cleveland was 23rd in the league over with an average of 324.6 yards per game. They earned 229.9 of these yards in the air making them 23rd in the league in passing. The run game faired a little better earning an average of 108 yards per game putting them 22nd in the league in rushing. The Browns managed to score an average of 18. 7 points per game putting them in 17th in league in scoring.
Cleveland’ strong defensive core was key to their victories last year as they were ranked 7th overall in the league giving up only 366.1 yards per game. The majority of those yards were earned by the weak showing of their pass defense which ranked 23 in the league allowing 236.4 passing yards. The Browns run defense was impressive allowing only 141.6 yards per game

Two teams that underperformed according to expectations last season may want to instill a winning atmosphere from the get go. However, Browns’ HC Mike Pettine was only 1-3 last year in his first season as a HC making it look like winning isn’t the biggest priority. It appears the opposite is the case for the Redskins’ HC Jay Gruden who holds a lifetime head coach preseason record of 3-1. it also doesn’t hurt when you have three veteran QBs to receive playing time.
