Expert picks: 2015 PGA Championship
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — There’s less than 24 hours until the year’s final men’s major.
We’re less than a day from starting to figure out if Jordan Spieth can become the third man to win three pro majors in a year. We’re so close to seeing if Rory McIlroy can make a masterful comeback from an ankle injury. We’ll find out soon if a complete unknown hoists the Wanamaker on Sunday.
So who will win? The Yahoo Sports golf crew offers their PGA Championship picks:
Jay Busbee: Bubba Watson — Everything’s clicking for Bubba; he’s ranked third in the world and second in the FedEx Cup rankings. He’s got two wins on the season and is coming off two straight solo-second finishes. He’s got history at Whistling Straits — he was in that fateful playoff back in 2010, a bit of trivia overshadowed by Martin Kaymer’s win and Dustin Johnson’s bunker mistake. And although he’s got a rep as a bomber, he’s slick enough to play the kind of creative golf that this course will demand. If he can keep his head in the game enough to make the cut — always an if with Bubba — expect Watson to be contending late on Sunday.
Jay Hart: Dustin Johnson — What better place to exercise his demons than the birthplace of his very first demon. There’s a good argument to be made that other than Jordan Spieth, DJ has had the best major season of 2015. He finished T-6 at the Masters, the one major he didn’t lead this year. At the level he’s playing right now, four solid rounds would be good enough to beat anyone, including Spieth. The question is if he can string four days together.
Ryan Ballengee: Rickie Fowler — This is Fowler’s time. He’s showed he can win on a big stage, with a flurry to get into a Players playoff and win. He has six top-10 finishes in the majors, including four top-five bids last year. He finished second at the Quicken Loans National. The odds speak against Jordan Spieth pulling off the win and Fowler is poised to lift the Wanamaker.
