The New York Rangers announced on Monday morning that they have signed free agent forward Jarret Stoll to one-year contract that is reportedly worth $800,000.
Stoll, who was an unrestricted free agent this summer, spent the past seven seasons playing for the Los Angeles Kings and was a member of their Stanley Cup winning teams in 2012 and 2014. The 33-year-old center scored six goals to go with 11 assists in 17 games this past season. His time with the Kings came to an end this summer following his arrest for allegeding bringing cocaine to a Las Vegas pool party in April. He was originally facing jail time but the felony charge was dropped down to two misdemeanors.
His sentence included more than 30 hours of community service that had to be served within 120 days. Part of that community service involved him putting together a youth hockey program for at-risk kids in Las Vegas, as well as work at the salvation army.
He also reportedly donated $50,000 worth of equipment to the youth hockey program in Las Vegas.
The signing of Stoll comes just one year after the Rangers signed forward Ryan Malone to a two-way contract a few months after he was arrested for cocaine possession and DUI, ending his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Malone ended up appearing in six games for the Rangers at the NHL level before he was placed on unconditional waivers. Like that signing, this is a pretty low-risk move by the Rangers, and one that might even have a better chance of working out in their favor from a hockey standpoint since Stoll seems to be a better player at this point in his career than Malone was.
Before his time with the Kings, Stoll spent parts of five seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before he was traded to the Kings, along with Matt Greene, for Lubomir Visnovsky in June, 2008.
In 792 career regular season games he has scored 140 goals to go with 239 assists. He has also added 10 goals and 16 assists in 93 career playoff games.
