Jordan Spieth is bringing the U.S. Open trophy to the PGA to tease Mickelson
Jordan Spieth is pulling out the stops to be a winner at Whistling Straits.
No, this has nothing to do with the PGA Championship and everything to do with a Tuesday money match.
The 22-year-old twice-over 2015 major winner is teaming up with buddy Justin Thomas to take on Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler at the Kohler, Wisc., course. In an effort to gain some kind of mental edge over Mickelson, who is notorious for trying to get in the heads of his pre-tournament opponents, Spieth is going to bring out the big guns.
“I’m going to try to get the U.S. Open trophy flown in so I can sit it on the front of each green for Phil so I’ll have something for him to — that’s just dishing it back,” Spieth said to laughter after a final-round 66 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational left him tied for 10th place.
“We’ll see if we can get somebody to carry it around for the round. It’s the first time I have something on him.”
Mickelson is a five-time major champion, but he’s never been able to snag the U.S. Open to complete the career Grand Slam. The left-hander has a record six runner-up finishes in the championship.
Then again, Mickelson has something Spieth almost had his hands around in July: a British Open crown in the form of the Claret Jug.
