Bizarre injury sidelines Colorado DL for second straight season
Colorado announced last week that defensive lineman Tyler Henington will miss his second straight season due to injury.
It was a torn knee ligament during practice that cost Henington the 2014 season. The circumstances were a littler stranger this time around.
Buffs head coach Mike MacIntyre said Henington stepped in a hole and broke his ankle and fibula.
Coach Mike MacIntyre said Henington was walking home from getting a sushi dinner with fellow Buff John Tuso last week when they stopped to talk on the sidewalk. At one point Henington shifted his weight, lost his balance and stepped in a hole, breaking his ankle and fibula.
MacIntyre said Henington was devastated when he visited him in the hospital the night of the injury.
“As soon as I walk in the door he just starts bawling,” MacIntyre said. “I’ve never had that happen where a young man comes back from a season-ending injury, works all the way, we’re five days away before we start and he gets hurt off the field. Now I’ve had guys get hurt on the field after that, but never before. Tyler is a great young man and he will recover from this and be back next year but it’s tough for him.”
Henington would have been a redshirt junior for the Buffs this season and is now eligible for a sixth season with the program in 2017.
The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Henington played in 23 games in his first two seasons with the program, including two starts. Overall, he registered 33 tackles and six tackles for loss.
