Amid an ongoing police investigation, Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane has officially hired an attorney. Paul Cambria, the same lawyer who represented Kane after he was accused of assaulting a cab driver in 2009, confirmed to the Associated Press that he has been hired by the NHL star again.
Hamburg, NY, police announced Friday that they are investigating an incident that allegedly occurred in Kane’s home last weekend. Police chief Gregory Wickett said the department is currently gathering information and awaiting forensic test results. The Buffalo News was first to report that this is a rape investigation.
Kane has not been charged with a crime.
Cambria has represented multiple high profile clients in the past including publisher Larry Flynt, rapper DMX and rocker Marilyn Manson.
Paul J. Cambria Jr. is recognized as one of the nation’s preeminent attorneys. He focuses his practice in the areas of criminal trials, criminal appeals, constitutional law, First Amendment law, zoning and land use, antitrust, and professional licensing defense.
Mr. Cambria has built a strong reputation for successfully representing individuals and businesses in complex, high-profile cases at all levels of the courts, including state, federal, and the United States Supreme Court.
The last time Cambria represented Kane, the Blackhawks forward pleaded not guilty to a non-criminal charge of disorderly conduct stemming from the altercation with the cab driver in 2009.
Meanwhile, as the current investigation continues, Kane spent his previously scheduled day with the Stanley Cup on Saturday.
As is tradition, each player of the winning team gets to spend an entire day with the trophy. That is usually filled with public events like parades, visits to hospitals, community events and things of that nature. The two previous times after the Blackhawks won the title, Kane toured the Stanley Cup around favorite spots in his native Buffalo. That was not the case this year.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Kane held a private event at his home with “about four dozen people” in attendance. Two known previously scheduled events, one at a local children’s hospital and another at a local rooftop bar, were canceled according to the AP.
Additionally, the Hockey Hall of Fame’s @KeeperoftheCup Twitter account, which has been sharing pictures from almost every player’s day with the Stanley Cup all summer, had none from Kane’s private event.
Police remain tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation, providing no details outside of Wickett’s statement Friday. The only additional piece of public information came when Wickett said “you’d probably be wasting your time” when a reporter asked if he expected to have more information over the weekend.
The Blackhawks, NHL and Kane’s agent Pat Brisson, have only acknowledged that they are aware of the investigation through statements to select media and have opted not to comment further.
