Andres Romero punches sign at Barracuda Championship, had to tee off with putter
Golf is hard enough. Andres Romero made it harder on Saturday at the Barracuda Championship.
The Argentine had just made consecutive bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes at Montreux Golf and Country Club, dropping to just 3 points on the day in the modified Stableford scoring system format. Frustrated, Romero punched a sign on the 15th tee box, injuring his hand.
After Romero punched the tee box sign, officials checked on him while allowing a group, including Patrick Rodgers, to play through. Romero’s playing partner Wil Wilcox had to endure the delay as well.
Romero decided to play on, taking advantage of the scoring format. A player could lose no more than 3 points on a hole, which was the score assigned to a double bogey or worse. So Romero putted his ball off of each of the final four tees, then picking up the ball to take a double bogey. He went from gaining 3 points to losing 9 points on the day. Afterward, Romero withdrew.
The incident hurts Romero’s chances to keep his PGA Tour card, with the WD projected to keep him in the mid-150s in FedEx Cup points.
