Glen Coffee, who abruptly retired from NFL, on Army Ranger School staff
Before it was fashionable for San Francisco 49ers to abruptly retire, running back Glen Coffee stepped away in 2010 after his rookie season.
It was a surprising story at the time, a third-round pick of the 49ers retiring suddenly and saying it was for religious reasons. It turns out Coffee didn’t really like football all that much, despite being a star at Alabama.
The Washington Post caught up with Coffee five years after he retired, and he seems to be doing well, after finding something he does enjoy. Coffee on the staff at Army Ranger School. He wanted to join the Special Forces, which didn’t work out, the Post said. But he’s a paratrooper assigned to Army Ranger School. He enlisted in 2013. The school trains elite soldiers in the Florida swamps, the Post said.

The story said he is asked often if he wants to attend the Ranger School. He’s debating whether to go.
Coffee isn’t sure if he’ll be a military lifer, retiring after 20 years.
“I would never say never, but as of right now I have so much I want to do,” Coffee told the Post’s Dan Lamothe. “So my first option is not to make this a career. But, you get to a certain age in life, and you realize that life doesn’t always happen as you plan, so we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.”
Coffee seems to be doing well. The story said soldiers in Coffee’s section know about his football past and teased him for dropping a pass in a flag football game. He appears to be fitting in just fine. It seems like he made the right choice to leave the NFL behind.
