49ers offseason gets even worse with Aldon Smith’s latest DUI arrest
San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith is very talented, and has a serious problem staying out of trouble. Two years after a DUI arrest made headlines, he was arrested again on a DUI charge.
Smith was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail on $26,000 bail on Friday, according to Matt Keller of ABC 7 in the Bay Area. Smith was arrested for hit and run, DUI, and vandalism, Santa Clara Police said. He was still in custody as of 7:30 a.m. Pacific time on Friday, Keller reported.
Given Smith’s history, this is really bad news, not just from a possible NFL punishment standpoint, but for Smith’s career as a whole.

Last year Smith was hammered with a nine-game suspension, for violation the substance-abuse policy and the personal-conduct policy. He was arrested in Sept. of 2013 on drunk driving charges.. He missed five games in 2013 after his DUI arrest when he checked into a substance abuse rehabilitation clinic. He also faced felony gun charges, though those were knocked down to misdemeanors. In 2014 he told a TSA agent at Los Angeles International Airport that he had a bomb, but no charges were brought in that case.
The 49ers have lost many players and coach Jim Harbaugh since last season ended, in one of the most damaging offseasons in NFL history. Having Smith, one of the 49ers’ most talented players who had 19.5 sacks in 2012, get arrested just adds to the horrific offseason.
