The College Football Playoff is expanding.
Well, sort of.
The CFP announced Tuesday that it will help foot travel costs for families of athletes whose teams participate in semifinal games. Last year, those $2500 stipends were not distributed until the championship game.
“We were pleased to implement this expense-reimbursement program for the first College Football Playoff national championship and we received warm and sincere positive feedback from the family members,” Bill Hancock, executive director of the CFP, said in a statement. “Extending support to the playoff semifinals will be another terrific benefit for folks who will be thrilled to be present to celebrate the accomplishments and experiences of their student-athletes.”
The CFP said it distributed $500,000 to assists families of athletes from Ohio State and Oregon, which squared off in the inaugural title game in January at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
