Seahawks trade undisclosed 2016 draft pick to Detroit for CB Mohammed Seisay – The Seattle Times
The Seahawks on Sunday traded a 2016 sixth-round draft pick to Detroit for cornerback Mohammed Seisay, a second-year player from Nebraska.
The 6-2, 206-pound Seisay played in 13 games for the Lions last season with five tackles. Two of those were special teams tackles.
He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and after being released at the final cutdown, was signed to Detroit’s practice squad and then elevated to the active roster in September.
Seisay played primarily outside with the Lions where he had a strong preseason in 2014.
“He’s got speed, he can run, and he’s got a good nose for the ball as well,” coach Jim Caldwell told the Detroit News last September. “Obviously, he’s youthful, has not had an opportunity to play as of yet, but I do think you’ll see he’ll make progress. What we saw from him in preseason, and also his work during practice, he’s a very good candidate to come in and give us some quick help.”
Seisay’s 2014 NFL.com scouting report begins with words that seem to fit many corners the Seahawks have had through the years: “A big, athletic height-weight-speed prospect with intriguing length and short-area quickness to develop as a short-area press corner. Has a chance to compete with simplified assignments.”
The Seahawks have some health concerns at cornerback with nickelback Jeremy Lane out indefinitely while recovering from off-season knee and arm surgery, and Tharold Simon continuing to rehab from off-season shoulder surgery. Coach Pete Carroll said Simon was progressing well and the team hoped he could play in preseason games. Lane and Simon are currently on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.
Coach Pete Carroll noted the injury issues after practice, saying “we are light at numbers in the DB (defensive back) area” and that that has caused some players who can play both corner and safety to concentrate on safety for the time being (specifically, DeShawn Shead and Steven Terrell, but also some of the younger players such as 2015 draft pick Ryan Murphy).
“We have some young guys that are doing some cool things at the safety spot that we want to see and we don’t want to have to mix those guys at corner,” Carroll said. “So there are some reasons it (the trade) makes sense.”
Of Seisay, Carroll said: “This is a guy that we see something special in and (Seahawks GM) John (Schneider) found him and he’s long and he’s fast and he’s very athletic and he’s young at the spot so he will be a guy we will try to build and see where he fits in.”
The Seahawks felt they could afford to give up a pick in 2016 since they figure to get at least three compensatory picks for the free agent losses of James Carpenter, Malcolm Smith and Byron Maxwell.
Seisay started just one game in his two years at Nebraska after beginning his career at Memphis.
