Penn State Basketball: State College Prospect Drew Friberg Picks Up … – State College News
It will be years before Penn State could ever use his services, but Pat Chambers and his staff are hopeful to have found a budding prospect in their own backyard.
The recruit in question, a 6-foot-5 wing and State College’s own Drew Friberg who picked up a scholarship offer from Penn State earlier this week.
Friberg was named to PennLive’s Big 15 Future’s team as a freshman at State High, averaging 12.1 ppg for the Little Lions. He is set to enter his second season this coming fall.
To be sure, Penn State and most college basketball programs cast a wide net on the recruiting trail. Equally true, the program’s relatively sparse recruiting relationship with the Little Lions. So for Friberg to pick up an offer is if nothing else the validation of his potential. While Penn State may not be residing within the top tiers of college basketball, Chambers and company are not ones to simply offer scholarships on a whim.
What transpires both at Penn State and over the next few years of Friberg’s high school career is a great unknown, but if nothing else both parties will be easy to follow just some three miles apart.
Taran Buie, brother of Penn State great Talor Battle, is the last State High alum to play for the Nittany Lion basketball squad although his time in State College lasted only one season both at State High and then Penn State. Gabe Norwood is perhaps the most well known State College basketball product, helping to lead George Mason on its famous NCAA Tournament run.
