NEW YORK — Former St. John’s player D.J. Kennedy scored 24 points as Overseas Elite won The Basketball Tournament and its $1 million prize by beating Team 23 67-65 on Sunday.
Kennedy made three free throws in the final 20 seconds for the team made up of Americans playing in Europe. Overseas Elite will split the $1 million among its eight players, coach and general manager.
Errick McCollum added 15 points, and Paris Horne, another St. John’s product, had 10 in the game at Fordham University.
Davin White scored 34 points for Arizona-based Team 23, but Zach Andrews couldn’t get off a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer.
Overseas Elite emerged from a field of 97 teams in the tournament that began July 12. More than 125 players who had either NBA or NBA Development League experience took part in the winner-take-all, single-elimination event.
