Lions trade Seisay to Seahawks for 2016 sixth-round pick – The Detroit News
Allen Park — Mohammed Seisay was ready to join the Lions for the start of training camp, but before practice begins Monday, the second-year cornerback will be on a different team.
The Lions traded Seisay to the Seahawks for a 2016 sixth-round pick Sunday in a deal that came together within the past 24 hours.
The Lions have yet to confirm the deal and likely won’t until he passes a physical, which will make the trade official. CBS Sports reported the sixth-round pick as the return for Seisay.
For the Lions, the trade could be a boon as Seisay faced long odds of making the roster. For the Seahawks, the 6-foot-2 cornerback fits the profile they look for at the position, and they have just six cornerbacks on the roster, creating an opportunity for Seisay to make the team.
Seisay joined the Lions in May 2014 as an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska. He started the season on the practice squad, but cornerback injuries led the Lions to put him on the active roster by Week 3. Seisay appeared in 13 games, primarily on special teams and as a backup cornerback, and had just five tackles.
Though he showed promise, particularly in the preseason with three pass deflections and an interception, Seisay was in logjam of cornerbacks competing for a roster spot in Detroit. Starters Darius Slay and Rashean Mathis are roster locks, and the Lions’ three draft picks the last two years — Nevin Lawson in 2014, Alex Carter and Quandre Diggs in 2015 — should make the team, too.
The Lions are also hopeful Josh Wilson can provide a veteran option at nickel, and Crezdon Butler, Chris Owens and R.J. Stanford all have experience.
With the 2016 draft pick, the Lions are back to having seven selections next year. During this year’s draft, they traded a third-round pick in 2016 to draft defensive tackle Gabe Wright in the fourth round. The Lions should also receive multiple compensatory picks next year after losing multiple starters in free agency.
