Andrew McCutchen is tired of John Fogerty’s ‘Centerfield’
This is somewhat ironic… don’t you think?
Former National League MVP and perennial All-Star Andrew McCutchen has made his name in part due to his skills as a center fielder, but apparently would get by just fine if he never heard John Fogerty’s 1985 hit song “Centerfield” again at the ballpark.
So writes the face of the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise in a questionnaire he filled out at the Players’ Tribune on Friday.
The exact question: “The song I never want to hear again in an arena/ballpark/stadium is … “
McCutchen’s brutally honest and unapologetic response: “Put me in coach,” which is easily the most repeated and recognizable lyric in the song, but the position in question and the title of the song remains “Centerfield.”
That video is pretty awesome. The song itself is, well, it’s not going to light up a ballpark like “Enter Sandman” or “Crazy Train,” but it’s fine for what it is. With that said though, it’s understandable that McCutchen has grown tired of it given the status the song has achieved in baseball circles.
Centerfield is a ballpark anthem in the same category as Steam’s ” “Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)” and “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.” It’s played at every ballpark, every day, from Little League through MLB, making it conceivable McCutchen has heard it start-to-finish over 2,500 times over the last 20 years. Love it or hate it, that’s enough for any song to wear out its welcome.
On a more positive note, McCutchen did share a few things he enjoys. For example, his favorite road city is Denver, which is understandable given the city’s beautiful landscape and hitter-friendly ballpark.
He also made sure to note he’s the best dresser on the team.
Who are we to argue?
And if the Pirates ever engaged in a WWE-style Royal Rumble, McCutchen says he would outsmart everybody by laying low and letting them fight before striking at the end.
That might be a good plan, but if and when McCutchen wins, we request they play Centerfield just to get an epic reaction.
