Valparaiso’s shot at another first-round buzzer-beater didn’t go as well
Bryce Drew hit one of the most famous game-winning shots in NCAA tournament history back in 1998. He and his Valparaiso teammates executed their final possession flawlessly to upset Ole Miss 70-69 in a first-round game.
With Drew now serving as Valparaiso’s head coach, the No. 13 seed Crusaders pushed No. 4 seed Maryland on Friday in the Midwest Regional. The game came down to the final minute and Valparaiso needed a 3-pointer to tie instead of being in position to win as it was 17 years ago.

Only this time, the execution wasn’t close to flawless and Valparaiso didn’t get to celebrate much except the fact that it had a pretty good season. Maryland won 65-62.
Give Maryland credit for defending the Crusaders well in the final seconds as they attempted to get up a tying shot. Valparaiso probably waited a little long and ultimately settled for Keith Carter’s wild, off-balance shot that ended in a turnover. Here is a look at both plays in one GIF.
