Dr. James Andrews has seen some stuff, man
In baseball circles, Dr. James Andrews’ name is synonymous with fear, pain and broken dreams. Andrews is the go-to doctor among baseball players, especially when it comes to having Tommy John surgery. While recovery rates for the surgery are fairly positive, the lengthy recovery time makes it one of the most undesirable injuries among pitchers.
Andrews could embrace the fact that he’s helping a lot of promising players continue their careers, but, instead, it appears he’s accepted his status as one of baseball’s grim reapers.
There’s Andrews with Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman. Stroman had his ACL repaired by Andrews recently, and seems excited about the prospect of getting back on the field soon. Andrews, on the other hand, well, let’s just say that’s the face of a man who has seen some stuff.
Andrews has seen so many athletes hit his operating table that it’s hard not to sympathize with him here. Is there meaning to this lonely existence? Will we ever unlock the mysteries of the world? Is life too short? His face seems to suggest he could be pondering any one of those questions.
More than likely, he’s just reminiscing about his latest round of golf. Doctors don’t actually enjoy playing golf, do they?
