Saturday Dose: Dose: Fit for a King
Friday’s NBA schedule netted a relatively light nine-game slate but there was no shortage of big performances to talk about. Russell Westbrook threw up a triple-double while Kyle Lowry provided a five category jewel. Ricky Rubio went down with an injury but Gorgui Dieng stepped up in place of Nikola Pekovic. But the fantasy showing of the night goes to DeMarcus Cousins.
Cousins lights up Sixers
Despite losing, DeMarcus Cousins set the fantasy world ablaze on Friday evening by torching Philadelphia to the tune of 39 points and a season-high 24 rebounds. Cousins was pretty unstoppable, going 12-24 from the field and 15-20 from the line. His rebound total was especially impressive and he’s been on a tear as of late. Over his last five he’s averaging 14 rebounds per contest.

Covington powers Philly
While Cousins was taking care of business in the paint for Sacramento, Robert Covington was sinking the Kings from the outside. The sharpshooting guard nailed six triples on his way to 24 points and three steals. This was a breakout game for Covington, who’s been slumping a bit lately. He’d shot under 33 percent in his previous three but this was his highest point total in over one month so hopefully he’s starting to get his confidence back.
Brooks continues strong run
Aaron Brooks was at it again on Friday, posting 24 points, four assists, and three triples for Chicago. He’s now averaging 23 points and two three-pointers over his last four and is locked in as the Bulls starting point guard. If you snagged him off the waiver wire, congrats, he looks to be a good play the rest of the way. If he’s still available in your league, go pick him up now.
Rubio goes down
Ricky Rubio tweaked his ankle against the Thunder in the third quarter on Friday and did not return to action. He finished with seven points, four assists, and two steals in 22 minutes. Rubio’s status is still a bit unclear so stay locked in for updates. If he were to miss significant time Zach LaVine would fill in as the starter. He finished Friday’s game with nine points and seven assists and is worth a speculative add if you have the roster space.
Turner explodes for 30
Evan Turner busted out with a season-high 30 points on Friday as the Celtics got past the Magic. Turner got hot in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points to lead the comeback. He added five boards, four assists, and two steals to round out a great line. Despite this effort from Turner he’s really not a must add. He’s a boom or bust play on most nights and although Friday was a boom, those are few and far between.
Biyombo fills in nicely
With Al Jefferson out with a right knee sprain, Bismack Biyombo started for Charlotte and put up a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards. He added one block in just over 20 minutes of action. Jefferson’s injury isn’t thought to be too serious and the Hornets are still fighting for a playoff spot so it’s not like Jefferson can take his time. Biyombo could be a nice short-term play if you’re in need of some cheap boards and blocks but he’s certainly not a long-term option.

Dieng thrives as starter
With Nikola Pekovic out with an injured ankle, Gorgui Dieng stepped in and played over 42 minutes on Friday. The result was 21 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks. Yes, he turned the ball over six times as well but that’s hardly an issue. Dieng has shown flashes of brilliance this season and this was one of those nights. Pekovic is expected to return any game now but even with Pekovic in the starting lineup, Dieng is still a fantasy asset.
Kanter and Westbrook lead Thunder
Both Enes Kanter and Russell Westbrook had great games for the Thunder on Friday. Kanter finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds, continuing to provide dividends since being traded from Utah. The Big man took some time getting used to his new surroundings and although he’s prone to some quiet outings, he’s been an overall fantastic pick up for Oklahoma City.
Westbrook on the other hand was just his normal awesome self during the contest. He racked up his eighth triple-double of the season with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. He turned the ball over eight times and shot 11-24 from the field which definitely hurts this line but it’s hard to complain about a triple-double. The point guard has six triple-doubles in his last eight games. That’s about all you need to know about how great he’s been.
Faried piles it on against the shorthanded Warriors
With the Warriors resting Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Bogut, and Andre Iguodala, Kenneth Faried was able to run hog wild, going for 24 points and 17 rebounds. This was a breakout game for Faried but it comes with a big asterisks. He’s actually having his best month of the season so far, averaging 13 and 10. He’s had a few big games in that stretch so it looks like he may finish the season on a strong note.
Lowry posts big line
Kyle Lowry threw up a fantasy gem on Friday. The point guard went for 19 points, eight boards, eight assists, five triples, and seven steals. To contribute that quality across five categories is no easy feat and a testament to how good Lowry has been so far this month. After a dreadful February, Lowry has started off March red hot, averaging 24 points and five assists.
