(4:31 pm ET) Nationals manager Matt Williams said right-handed pitcher Drew Storen underwent a surgical procedure on his left hand to remove the hook of hamate bone from his left hand.
The procedure isn’t expected to keep him out for long. Williams said Storen should only miss two or three spring-training games. After the rest, Storen will resume his throwing program.
Storen enjoyed the best season of his career in 2014, posting a 1.12 ERA in 65 appearances, even though he spent the majority of the year as a setup man instead of a closer.
Braves P Mike Foltynewicz gets rocked by Tigers in 8-2 loss
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4:17 pm ET) Braves right-handed pitcher Mike Foltynewicz has the physical tools to be successful in the big leagues. He’s 6-foot-4 with a live arm and is still young at only 23 years old.
However, his start to spring training has been anything but pleasant. In an 8-2 loss to the Tigers on Friday, Foltynewicz gave up five earned runs on four hits, walked two batters and only struck out one. He didn’t make it through the first inning.
It was the second poor performance in as many outings this spring for Foltynewicz.
“I’m overdoing it a little bit,” Foltynewicz said, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You’ve got a new team, you’ve got to impress coaches and all of that. I’m just out there trying to do too much.”
The performance ballooned Foltynewicz’s ERA to 23.14.
Foltynewicz was acquired by the Braves in a trade that sent catcher Evan Gattis to Houston.
Foltynewicz isn’t panicking yet and thinks he had an OK outing on Friday even though Detroit’s batters had their way.
“For the most part I was around the plate and they found some holes,” Foltynewicz said. “That was just bad luck on my part. I think overall I felt good and threw some good pitches so it stinks that things are falling that way.”

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:55 pm ET) Orioles starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez allowed three runs on five hits and no walks in four innings Friday against the Blue Jays. He struck out one.
Jimenez opened the game with a 1-2-3 first inning before running into some trouble in the second. The Blue Jays would score three times in the second to take a 3-2 lead.
However, Jimenez bounced back from the rough inning to post two more scoreless frames before handing the game over to the bullpen. Jimenez, who was making his third start, lowered his ERA from 16.20 to 11.05.
“Felt good,” Jimenez said of his outing, per MASNsports.com. “I was able to do what I wanted to today and that was command the fastball. Working on my mechanics. I felt really comfortable out there and could throw the fastball wherever I wanted, inside or outside.”
Ryan Raburn’s absence from Indians lineup won’t be long
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:44 pm ET) Indians manager Terry Francona said outfielder Ryan Raburn received a lubricant injection and had his ailing left knee drained of fluid after leaving Thursday’s spring game, per MLB.com.
Raburn, who had knee surgery in September, said he has dealt with mild soreness throughout spring. However, the injury flared up while legging out a double in the first inning against the Royals.
“I came around first, and my spike just caught. When it did, my leg wanted to go out,” Raburn said. “It just fired it up. It was barking, but it’s good now. No problem.”
Francona said Raburn was already scheduled to receive the injection before leaving Thursday’s game and is scheduled to be back in the spring lineup Saturday against the Dodgers.

Cano’s grandfather, Ovidio Cano, died of lung cancer. He was a major influence on Cano’s life with his pursuit of playing professional baseball.
“He was a guy who had all my numbers. He always wrote down my stats,” Cano said, via MLB.com. “He followed everything. He’d call me sometimes and say, ‘How you doing?’ I’d say, ‘I’m good.’ And he’d say, ‘Last year at this time, you were hitting .330, 10 homers, 40 RBIs. So this year, you need five RBIs, one homer and three hits to be where you were last year.’ Those are the things that really motivate me.”
