Gio Gonzalez manages to insert 10 ‘meows’ into in-game interview
When you’re a starting pitcher on an off day, you have to find ways to entertain yourself during games. That’s especially true in spring training, when the results of said games hardly matter. Washington Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez recognizes this, and decided to have a little fun during an in-game interview Wednesday.
Did anything sound a little different to you? Gonzalez appeared to go the “Super Troopers“route, replacing the word “now” with “meow.” That seems to be confirmed by starter Max Scherzer about halfway through the video, as he can be seen counting each “meow” Gonzalez manages to sneak into the interview.
The final verdict … Gonzalez snuck 10 “meows” in there. MASN sideline reporter Dan Kolko clearly caught onto the stunt while talking to Gonzalez, and even got in his own “meow” when tossing things back to the booth.
Following the interview, Nationals color commentator F.P. Santangelo guessed that Scherzer and Gonzalez had a bet going involving how many “meows” Gonzalez could get in there. Santangelo figured Gonzalez had won about 1,000 … um … gummy bears from Scherzer for going all-in. That’s unconfirmed, of course, but fun to speculate about.
There aren’t many stunts in “Super Troopers” that are safe for TV, so kudos to the Nationals for finding the one that works. Had they tried something more risque, Car RamRod may have come to take them away.
