Wade Boggs once drank 107 beers in a day, maybe
Baseball urban legend says that Hall of Famer Wade Boggs once drank 64 beers on a cross-country flight from Boston to Los Angeles. Boggs himself has denied that actual figure in the past, nonetheless that urban legend is the basis of Wednesday’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” season premiere.
The crew on the degenerate FXX comedy attempts to break Boggs’ record — with tallies on their T-shirts and everything. Boggs himself makes an appearance in the episode, as Yahoo TV announced exclusively back in May. In true “It’s Always Sunny” fashion, Boggs appears in hallucination form, telling actor Charlie Day’s character that there’s “nothing more fun than winning” and encouraging him to keep drinking.
Day was a guest Monday on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon and revealed that the legend of Boggs may be even greater. Day claims that during the filming of the episode, Boggs pulled him aside and said he actually drank 107 beers in one day— including before the flight and after.
Here’s the clip, including an appearance from the Boggs apparition:
The question here is whether we believe Charlie Day — a funny guy appearing on a late-night talk show — is telling us the truth. Let’s put it this way: we don’t don’t believe him, but we’d much rather hear the 107-beer confession from Boggs himself. Maybe he’ll fess up on Twitter before or during Wednesday’s “It’s Always Sunny” premiere.
Here’s another clip of the show and its mile-high, beer-drinking ridiculousness.
