Jon Lester spends hours responding to congratulations and criticism on Twitter
Jon Lester’s Twitter account was fairly quiet all throughout the free-agency process. That changed when the newest member of the Chicago Cubs sent out these two tweets on Wednesday morning, the day after agreeing to a six-year, $155 million contract.
Those few sentences garnered quite a reaction, both positive and negative, and Lester spent hours responding to the hundreds of comments he received this afternoon. Seriously, just go take a look at his timeline.
Here are just a few of them:
Most of the people upset are Red Sox fans who were hoping Lester would return to Boston, where he helped the team win the World Series in 2007 and 2013. At least a few decided to have fun some with it, sending out some obviously sarcastic tweets meant to poke a little fun at Lester, done in the same way as the Hunter Pence signs this summer.
Social media gives fans a direct line to their favorite athletes. While it’s possible that Lester has someone handle his various accounts (he can certainly afford it), the messages seemed to come from a genuine place.
All things considered, Lester couldn’t have handled the situation any better, and now he’s off to Chicago where he’ll be expected to play a big role in the Cubs’ revival.
