Adam Wainwright apologizes to fantasy players for missing start
Adam Wainwright calls himself a bit of a fantasy football geek, making this time of year nearly as important for him as October baseball.
It’s playoff time in most leagues and Wainwright found himself starting Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas in one of his many leagues. When Thomas was a late scratch in Denver’s game against Buffalo on Sunday, the Cardinals ace couldn’t believe he would be getting no points from a crucial position and wondered how that could happen in the above YouTube video:
“Who in the world would say they’re going to play and not, and it’s fantasy football playoff time and affect thousands of people?”
Then he realized he’d done the same thing.
St. Louis clinched the NL Central title before Wainwright’s final start this season. Instead of taking the ball for the Cardinals, the big right-hander chose to get some rest before the playoffs. His missed start may have had an impact on hundreds if not thousands of fantasy baseball leagues. After his experience with Thomas, Wainwright felt like he owed those potentially affected an apology:
“I just want to say to all you fantasy baseball players, I’m sorry, and Julius no hard feelings. I hope you get well soon.”
Who knew fantasy football would be a source of introspection for one of baseball’s best pitchers?
