MLB stars make case for MLB 15: The Show cover
After much speculation, the folks involved with MLB: The Show unveiled the cover man for their 2015 video game on Friday. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig got the nod, joining the likes of Miguel Cabrera, Andrew McCutchen and Joe Mauer as recent players bestowed with the honor.
Perhaps Puig helped his own case earlier this season when he posted a video celebrating hitting a walk-off grand slam as himself on MLB The Show.
Intentional or not, that was pretty clever marketing by Puig.
That said, Puig’s star power, personality and the controversy that often surround his antics are strong enough that any company looking to market a baseball related product would be wise to consider using his likeness.
Like it or not, controversy creates awareness and cash. Though that certainly didn’t stop other players (and one manager) from staking their claim on the cover. For example, here’s former cover boy Andrew McCutchen’s attempting to hit paydirt again.
Playing off the most popular baseball meme in 2014, San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence gives us a sign of his own.
Do people really use the manager mode? We’re guessing new Chicago Cubs skipper Joe Maddon does, if only to sharpen his skills.
What trade rumors? David Price sees himself as a Tiger. Literally.
That one is difficult to top, but if you head over to MLB The Show’s Twitter feed you’ll see that quite a few fans were creative as well in creating their own cover.
By the way, here’s the game’s official video trailer, in which Puig hits a grand slam. Bet you didn’t see that coming.
We know you can hardly wait, but you’ll have to. MLB 15: The Show won’t be available until March 21, 2015.
