NFL Picks Against the Spread 2014: Week 13 – Bleeding Green Nation
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports
Here are my suggestions when trying to beat Las Vegas.
Before Week 13 of the 2014 NFL season kicks off, I thought we would have some fun by taking a look at the spreads for this week’s round of games. (Click here for NFL Week 13 picks without regard to the spread.)
Here are my suggestions when trying to beat Vegas. You can find all of today’s NFL betting lines and more at the SB Nation odds page. My record so far this season: 72-85-2. (Last week’s picks.)
I finished above .500 last week with a 7-5 record. Still having a bad season. But that won’t stop me from continuing to look foolish. Let’s get to the picks.

NFL WEEK 13
Before we get started, I’d like to note that I usually don’t factor the Thursday Night Football games into this post since I release it late on Saturday night or early on Sunday morning. But since there were three Thursday games, I’m going to take credit for successfully picking the two early games. I had the Lions covering (-7) and the Eagles winning outright.
Tennessee Titans at Houston Texans (-7): The Texans should be able to take care of business here in this lackluster AFC South match-up. The Titans are so bad and boring. Pick: Texans -7
Cincinnati Bengals at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-4): This will be the Bengals third straight game on the road. The stripes usually aren’t good away from Cincy but they’ve been winning recently. The Bucs have been keeping games close so this potentially has the making for an upset. With that said, the safe pick is to take the Bengals. Pick: Bengals -4
Washington Redskins at Indianapolis Colts (-10): RG3 is benched and Colt McCoy is taking over. Watch McCoy find a way to keep this game close or even win because that would be hilarious. Pick: Washington +10
New York Giants (-3) at Jacksonville Jaguars: The G-men aren’t good, but the Jaguars are just awful. I can’t believe this line is only three points. Pick: Giants -3
Carolina Panthers at Minnesota Vikings (-3): The Panthers have more to play for since they’re theoretically still alive in the NFC South. Carolina hasn’t won a game since early October so perhaps they’re due. I like the Vikings with home field advantage here. Pick: Vikings -3
San Diego Chargers at Baltimore Ravens (-6): The Chargers are a hard team to place. They looked like the best team in the NFL earlier in the season but have struggled since. Meanwhile, the Ravens own the league’s fourth best point differential. I like Baltimore to take care of business at home. Pick: Ravens -6
New Orleans Saints at Pittsburgh Steelers (-5): The Steelers are also a hard team to place. They’re coming off a bye and shouldn’t have much struggle carving through a bad Saints defense. Then again, the Pittsburgh defense isn’t much better. I think the Saints will cover somehow, even if they lose. Pick: Saints +5
Must Reads
Cleveland Browns at Buffalo Bills (-3.5): Bryan Hoyer doesn’t inspire confidence against that Buffalo defense. Kyle Orton isn’t very inspiring either. Have to go with the home team. Pick: Bills -3.5
Oakland Raiders at St. Louis Rams (-7): The Raiders are RED HOT coming off their first win of the season last week. They also have the benefit of extra rest heading into this match-up. Mark my words: Oakland will cover this spread. Pick: Raiders +7
Arizona Cardinals (-2) at Atlanta Falcons: Somehow the Falcons lead the NFC South at 4-7. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are at the top of the NFC West but they could be fading fast. Arizona isn’t the same with Drew Stanton at quarterback. I like the Falcons with the points here, because I think it’s going to be close either way. Pick: Falcons +2
New England Patriots at Green Bay Packers (-3): This is the game that everyone is dubbing the potential Super Bowl 49 preview. These are the two best teams in the NFL right now. The Packers have the distinct advantage of playing at home where Aaron Rodgers in untouchable. On the other hand, the Patriots have won seven games in a row. Their average margin of victory in those games is 20 points. I like the points. Pick: Patriots +3
Denver Broncos (-1.5) at Kansas City Chiefs: The Broncos have look vulnerably recently, but the Chiefs are coming off of a loss to the previously winless Raiders. Allow me to oversimplify this one: Peyton Manning versus Alex Smith. Pick: Broncos -1.5
Miami Dolphins (-7) at New York Jets: The Jets look pretty lifeless and Miami looks very alive. New York is also playing on short rest. Pick: Dolphins -7
