Pirates’ Pedro Alvarez expected to have normal offseason

(7:52 pm ET) Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez is expected to have a normal offseason, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Alvarez had a stress reaction in his foot. The injury ended his season prematurely. The team designated Ike Davis for assignment Thursday, confirming it will move ahead with Alvarez at first next season. General manager Neal Huntington confirmed the news, saying “we’ve essentially committed to Pedro over Ike Davis.”
Cubs add C.J. Edwards to 40-man roster

Edwards is considered one of the team’s best pitching prospects. The 23-year-old posted a 2.35 ERA over two levels in 2014.
Pirates designate Ike Davis for assignment

Davis was acquired by the club midseason, and hit .233/.344/.378 over 360 at-bats last year. The 27-year-old should draw interest if he chooses to become a free-agent.
Rays designate Jose Molina for assignment

(7:08 pm ET) The Rays have designated catcher Jose Molina for assignment on Thursday, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Molina is signed for $2.75 million in 2015. The team wanted to clear space on the 40-man roster, and determined Molina had to go. The 39-year-old hit .178 over 225 at-bats last year.
Reds add Kyle Waldrop, Amir Garrett to 40-man roster

(6:29 pm ET) The Reds have added Kyle Waldrop and Amir Garrett to the 40-man roster.
Waldrop is a former first round draft pick with the Twins. Garrett posted a 3.64 ERA over 133 1/3 innings at Class A.

Zach Lee , Chris Reed and Scott Schebler all had their contracts purchased. All three players will now be ineligible for the Rule-5 draft.
Diamondbacks shore up 40-man roster

The team purchased the contract of pitcher Kevin Munson and A.J. Schugel . Both players are now unavailable for the Rule-5 draft. In order to make room on the roster, the team designated Mike Bolsinger and Charles Brewer for assignment.
Pirates claim Pedro Florimon from Nationals

(5:32 pm ET) The Pirates have claimed infielder Pedro Florimon off waivers from the Nationals.
Florimon didn’t see much time in the majors last season, receiving just 76 at-bats. He hit just .092 between the Twins and Nationals. The 27-year-old will join his fourth franchise in six seasons.
Mets put Noah Syndergaard, five others on 40-man roster

(5:24 pm ET) The Mets placed six pitchers to their 40-man roster, including highly-touted prospect Noah Syndergaard, reports The Star-Ledger. New York also added pitchers Cory Mazzoni, Hansel Robles, Gabriel Ynoa, Akeel Morris and Jack Leathersich.
Pitcher Jeff Walters, who’s recovering from Tommy John surgery, was removed from the 40-man roster.
