Henderson adds to Liverpool injury woes
ESPN FC’S Gabriele Marcotti discusses Liverpool’s lack of success this season
Jordan Henderson is to be assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff after picking up a hamstring injury while on England duty.
Henderson had completed the full 90 minutes of Saturday’s 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Slovenia at Wembley, a match in which he scored an own goal. Bu the midfielder sat out his country’s 3-1 friendly win over Scotland at Celtic Park on Tuesday because of the problem.
Roy Hodgson told reporters after the match that Henderson had not been considered for selection after suffering the injury, although he revealed it was “very minor” – and his club manager Brendan Rodgers will wait for the reports of his medical team before deciding whether he can play a part in Sunday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.
The 24-year-old, a £16 million signing from Sunderland in June 2011, has become a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield following a stuttering start to his Anfield career.
Rodgers offered him the chance to leave for Fulham in the summer of 2012, but Henderson chose to stay and fight for his place. He helped them finish second in the Premier League last season, and was named vice-captain in September following Daniel Agger’s departure for Danish club Brondby.
Henderson’s injury is a concern for Rodgers, who is waiting to discover how much longer Daniel Sturridge will be out for after suffering a new thigh injury while training with the club on Tuesday.
Sturridge, who has not played for Liverpool since August, suffered a first thigh injury in September, then pulled up with a calf problem on October.
