DeSean Jackson joins Robert Griffin III in ripping Redskins teammates
If Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III stabbed his teammates in the back after Sunday’s 27-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then wide receiver DeSean Jackson twisted the knife on Monday.
A day after Griffin announced in the wake of his two-interception performance, “It doesn’t take one guy, and that’s proven,” Jackson backed his quarterback’s claims with a photo on Instagram of the following quote.
“You can’t do epic (expletive) with basic people.”
Now, Jackson may be lumping Griffin and even himself in that “basic people” population, but it sure seems like the three-time Pro Bowl wideout is frustrated by the team’s 3-7 record after losing to a two-win team.
As our own Eric Edholm covered in great detail here, Griffin began Sunday’s postgame press conference by saying, “We can’t throw knives and stab each other in the back,” and then promptly impaled his teammates with a series of skewers aimed between their shoulder blades.
“It takes 11 men,” Griffin said. “It doesn’t take one guy, and that’s proven. If you want to look at the good teams in this league and the great quarterbacks, the Peytons and the Aaron Rodgers, those guys don’t play well if their guys don’t play well. They don’t.
“We need everybody. I need every one of those guys in that locker room, and I know they’re looking at me saying the same thing.”
There lies some truth beneath his statements, but Griffin would be better served keeping quiet as the de facto leader on a team tied for last place in the NFC East.
This isn’t the first time Jackson has stood up for his quarterback, either. He asked his teammates to support Griffin during a team meeting and publicly backed the former No. 2 overall pick in the media last week.
“I’ve never been a vocal guy to yell at a player or get on another player,” Jackson said. “That just wasn’t me. Now I’m in my seventh year, I’ve been through a lot and I understand how things can be portrayed. That’s the wrong impression you want to give when you have a young guy like RGIII being the quarterback and what he’s been through in his career so far. I wanted to stand up and let him know I’m supporting him, and hopefully everyone else can support the situation, too.”
That won’t be such an easy task with games at San Francisco and Indianapolis the next two weeks.
