Randall Cobb said Packers knew Bears ‘may lay down on us’
The Chicago Bears said they used the bye week to reassess everything as a team.
Did the “everything” part include their own mental softness?
After Sunday night’s thrashing, losing 55-14 to the Green Bay Packers, the Bears look to be a bad football team, or at least a mentally fragile one. And it appears the Packers weren’t shocked by that.
Asked after the game how the Packers were able to lay the wood so early — and so easily — against the rival Bears, Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb offered some interesting commentary.
“We knew the Bears had said something about being a desperate team right now,” Cobb said. “We knew that if we got up early on them, they may lay down on us. We were able to put some points up.”
Cobb said it rather matter-of-factly, too.
The Bears don’t lack for talent. But they appear to lack any kind of mental toughness to withstand an early blow in a game and then counterpunch. The evidence is there: The Bears have been outscored 94-7 in the first halves of their three straight losses.
They had nothing to offer to slow down the Packers on Sunday and appeared to throw in the towel quickly. What makes it all the more painful is that the Packers could see it coming.
Bears head coach Marc Trestman seemed stunned by the result, saying that the team had a “tremendous” week of preparation for the Packers. These are the kinds of things that get coaches fired.
