Marc Trestman: Bears preparations for Packers were ‘outstanding’
Need a good laugh on this fine Monday morning?
Marc Trestman said late Sunday night that the job his coaches did preparing for the Green Bay Packers was “outstanding.” He also characterized the prep work of his players as “tremendous.”
As for what happened between all those great practices and a first half of football that saw the Packers take a 42-point lead en route to a 55-14 laugher? Well, Trestman is as confused as you are.
Actually, make that “confounded.”
“Based on what I saw this week, I was confounded to see the type of play we had (on Sunday night),” Trestman told reporters at Lambeau Field. “Our coaches did an outstanding job of preparing our guys this week. And our guys did a tremendous job of preparing. But none of it, none of it translated to the game.”
Lost in translation? The Bears looked completely lost, period. Sunday’s debacle came two weeks after Chicago found itself trailing the Patriots 38-7 at halftime and after a bye week that gave the team an opportunity to fully prepare for a squad it had already seen once this season. The Bears are now 3-6 and a game behind a Minnesota Vikings team that’s led by a rookie quarterback and has been without Adrian Peterson for most of the season.
Not exactly what you’d expect from a team that once boasted lofty playoff aspirations.
Trestman did characterize Sunday night’s loss as “extremely disturbing” but continued to qualify the statements with assertions about his team’s work ethic (“as good as any team I’ve ever been around”) and preparations.
I told our football team at halftime and after the game that we’re not a very good football team right now. Obviously,” Trestman said. ” We have descended over the last three weeks and we didn’t make any changes or any positive movement after the bye. And that starts with me.
Trestman was correct about one thing: The blame does start with him and if you’re listening to the grumbling in Chicago you’re just as likely to hear carping about Trestman as you are embattled quarterback Jay Cutler. (Not an easy feat to pull off in the Windy City.)
Trestman is only in his second season at Soldier Field, but it’s not hard to imagine it being his last should the trends continue.
