Eight players win their first Silver Slugger award, including Giancarlo Stanton
Award season rolled on in Major League Baseball on Thursday, as the best hitters of 2014 were honored with Silver Slugger trophies.
One thing that stuck out on the winners’ list: Many first-timers were honored. Giancarlo Stanton, the mighty Miami Marlins outfielder, topped that list after hitting 37 homers and driving in 105 runs. Stanton’s been one of the most imposing sluggers in the game for a few years now, but in 2014, he capitalized on his potential. He’s also one of the top three vote-getters for NL MVP, which will be handed out next week.
Other first-time Silver Slugger honorees include MLB hits-leader Jose Altuve, AL rookie of the year favorite Jose Abreu, AL MVP finalist Michael Brantley, Washington Nationals’ breakout star Anthony Rendon and even the World Series MVP, pitcher Madison Bumgarner. Yan Gomes and Neil Walker are the other first-time winners.
In all, eight of the 18 Silver Slugger winners were first-timers. Mike Trout, Jose Bautista, Andrew McCutchen and Ian Desmond each won their third, while Adrian Beltre is the most tenured on this year’s list, taking home his fourth.
Everybody else won for the second time, including Victor Martinez, whose previous Silver Slugger award came 10 years ago in 2004. Here’s the entire list:
