Crean says Indiana forward Davis recovering well from ‘traumatic brain injury’
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana coach Tom Crean used three words to describe sophomore forward Devin Davis’ injury that hadn’t been put forth in public previously — “traumatic brain injury” — that made it clear the young Hoosier is dealing with a challenging recovery.
Davis was hurt Friday night when, as police determined, he stepped in front of a moving vehicle driven by teammate Emmitt Holt after Holt had dropped him off in an IU parking lot. Both Holt and Davis had been drinking alcohol, according to the accident report, and are underage.

“Going for walks, when he goes down the hallway — yesterday was a big day. He went for two walks,” Crean said. “That’s kind of where we are right now.”
After Indiana’s 94-70 exhibition victory Thursday night over Northwood, Crean told reporters he expected several members of the team to try to visit Davis at Bloomington Hospital.
Crean said it was “big” for him to see that Davis’ father, Devin Sr., attended the game.
Davis is a 6-7, 230-pound power forward from Indianapolis. He averaged 2.4 points and 2.6 rebounds as a freshman last season and was expected to play a key role as a frontcourt reserve for the Hoosiers.
“He is getting a lot of therapy: physical therapy, speech therapy, those types of things,” Crean said.
“We know he’s in good hands up there. We know he’s improving.”
Crean said this was only the second time in his 15-year head coaching career that he’d had a player in the hospital while his team was playing a game.
“I’ve not been given anything that leads me to believe that he will not continue to improve, and he’s definitely making progress,” Crean said. “It’s unbelievable to see it … considering where we were at in the middle of the night on Friday.”
