Gerrard on bench as Liverpool face Madrid
Liverpool have made seven changes from the XI that started against Newcastle United for their Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
Steven Gerrard is the stand-out omission, with manager Brendan Rodgers hinting earlier that he could rest his captain for the trip to the Bernabeu. Martin Skrtel skippers the team in Gerrard’s absence.
Six others who started the loss to Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday are either on the bench or dropped altogether for the Champions League tie.
Glen Johnson, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli are all among the substitutes, while Dejan Lovren is left out of the squad.
Gareth Bale makes his return to the bench for holders Real, who ran out 3-0 winners at Anfield a fortnight ago.
Real Madrid: Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo, Kroos, Modric, Isco, Rodriguez, Ronaldo, Benzema
Subs: Navas, Pepe, Bale, Hernandez, Nacho, Medran, Lucas Torro
Liverpool: Mignolet, Manquillo, Toure, Skrtel, Moreno, Lucas, Can, Allen, Lallana, Markovic, Borini
