Costa weak to leave for Chelsea, says Atletico president
Diego Costa had “a moment of weakness” when he left Atletico Madrid for Chelsea in the summer, according to the president of the Spanish champions.
Costa, who was also a Champions League runner-up with Atletico last season, moved to London in a £32 million deal after hitting 35 goals in their dazzling campaign.
However, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo said his departure had come in “a moment of weakness” and that his club received “less than what had been discussed” for Costa, who has already scored nine times for Premier League leaders Chelsea.
“He’s one of the best strikers in the world. He left too quickly because he had a moment of weakness and did not know how to say no,” Cerezo told Radio4G in Spain.
“If the same were to happen now, he wouldn’t leave. The financial issue, for us, has not been so good. We received around 50% of the figures being talked about.
“It was more an issue of money going to him.”
