Jerry Jones offers his wife’s first-class seat on London flight to Tony Romo
The Dallas Cowboys are going to London for next Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and apparently quarterback Tony Romo is making the trip with them.
Romo has two fractures in the transverse process in his back and missed last week’s game as a result. So to make sure he is comfortable on the flight to England, owner Jerry Jones said he can fly first class next to him. This might be a surprise to Jones’ wife Gene, who might not know yet that she’s giving up her seat to Romo.
“Some of those seats really make out into a nice cot, bed-type configuration,’’ Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News. “He will get one of those. Gene will sit up in the bulkhead. Romo will lounge on the way over.
“You don’t think it’d be me, do you?’’
Jones was joking, or at least one would think (hope?) he is. It was a funny line by the charismatic owner, but there’s actual news in there. Romo making the trip to London means the Cowboys at least have hope that he can come back after missing just one game. They wouldn’t waste their time or Romo’s either if there was no chance. The Cowboys lost to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday with Brandon Weeden at quarterback.
“The proof of the pudding is we certainly wouldn’t put him on that plane and take him to London and fly over and fly back if we weren’t planning on him playing,’’ Jones said.
The Cowboys have a bye after going to London, so it would make some sense for Romo to sit, get healthy and have three full weeks off between his injury and his first game back. But it seems Jones is serious about him playing. He’s probably not so serious about the seating arrangements on the flight over.
