FSU’s Fisher: Winston injury doesn’t alter plan
Jimbo Fisher says Jameis Winston’s ankle injury isn’t anything to worry about. (USATSI) Usually, an ankle injury (and noticeable limp) suffered by the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback of the defending national champions and No. 2 team in the country would be a little more scrutinized than it seems like Jameis Winston’s — suffered in the third quarter of Florida State’s 42-31 come-from-behind victory at Louisville — has been.
But Winston overcoming the injury to guide the Seminoles to 35 second-half points against the then-No. 1 ranked total defense in the FBS likely has something to do with that. And it’s not going to change based on the word of Winston’s coach, who per the Orlando Sentinel told reporters Monday that the ankle isn’t anything to worry about.
“Not one bit,” Jimbo Fisher said when asked if he would alter his game plan due to Winston’s injury. “Game time. … Pain is temporary, you’ve got to put it away. The guys that can play with it and deal with it are the guys who have tremendous success for a long time. I thought he dealt with it for a long time.”
Fisher added it would be “wait and see” on whether Winston missed any practice time with the injury, though he implied he was fine with his quarterback “practic[ing] with pain” so he would be ready to “play with pain.”
Florida State hosts Virginia (2-3, 4-5) at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Seminoles are currently listed as 18.5-point favorites.
