Michael Jordan took over the Hornets’ social media accounts, shared selfies, photobombed, was hip
As promised, legendary player-turned-owner Michael Jordan took over the Charlotte Hornets’ social media accounts on Tuesday, and while he didn’t necessarily deliver the most scintillating tweets of all time — don’t beat yourself up, M.J.; we can’t all be Playboy-quality — the season-opening gimmick came off well, all things considered. I mean, nobody had to delete any tweets and apologize for comments that didn’t reflect the opinions of their employers or anything, so, y’know, pretty good!

The Hall of Famer opened things up by evoking the famous two-word 1995 press release that announced the end of his yearlong departure to Double-A:
(Definitely wasn’t prepared to see the greatest basketball player I’ve ever watched out here writing “just kidding LOL.” OK. Breathe. Readjust to your new reality.)
After clarifying that he was only joking about making a comeback at age 51 — “Don’t laugh” — Mike showed us his coffee mug:
… and the swag the Hornets will be giving away at their season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night:
(The tuxedo T-shirt seems an especially strong sartorial touch for the noted latter-day fashion icon.)
And now, in what feels like the most 2014 thing I could write, here is a #MichaelJordanSelfie:
In case you did not know, Michael Jordan is a popular sneaker gentleman whose sneakers people like quite a bit, and he owns a team whose rebranded color scheme people like quite a bit, and sometimes he likes to put his hands together and make said people very happy/jealous:
But hey, being the famously frosty owner doesn’t mean that M.J. can’t be just one of the gang! Here he is fraternizing with his employees and photobombing Hornets.com reporter Eryn Gradwell:
Mike also worked on the Hornets’ Instagram feed, showing off the view from his owner’s suite at Time Warner Cable Arena:
(In case you’re wondering, yes, that does appear to be the elephant print that’s been used to great effect on Jordans in the past.)
But that’s not the only fancy seating option at M.J.’s disposal for Hornets games — he can also, of course, sit courtside next to Charlotte’s newly honeycombed home deck:
And, of course, it wouldn’t truly be an #MJTakeover if he didn’t engage in some trash talking, whether with his own players:
… or with PGA Tour player Keegan Bradley:
… or with the media:
But alas, Jordan’s foray into social media was only a limited engagement, and as tipoff on NBA’s opening night neared, it was time for Mike to say his goodbyes with one last selfie, joined by a much beloved old friend:
“Thanks for letting me take over social media today, #BuzzCity!” Jordan wrote in the photo’s caption. “It was a lot of fun. Going to be a great season. #MJTakeover”
It remains to be seen whether M.J. liked his maiden social media voyage enough to sign up for some accounts of his own. I mean, if one Michael Jordan on Twitter is good, two would be better, right? Just do yourself a favor, M.J., and steer clear of the mentions. You’re going to be dealing with more Robert Peras than you could shake a stick at, at the very least.
