Draymond Green calls out a Laker fan on Twitter for bragging about something that never happened
In the days leading up to the NBA’s tipoff of the 2014-15 regular season, the league’s teams are sending various contributors and even stars out for meet-and-greets and signing shows in the hopes of drumming up fan support. As one of the NBA’s more gregarious and interesting players, Golden State Warriors swingman Draymond Green would seem like a logical choice to go press the flesh as the Warriors ready themselves for what they hope will be an improved season and extended postseason run.
Golden State Warrior fandom, even during the squad’s lean years, has never been in question. With that in place, showy Los Angeles Laker fans have always been in plentiful supply, and apparently a signing session over the weekend proved as much once again.
Via the Triangle Offense, here’s one sub-tweeted interaction that had us all cracking up, via Green’s Twitter account:
Now, before you decide to go check out the kid in question’s Twitter account, don’t.
It is riddled with N-words and all sorts of awful things, and while I’d slough that off as some high schooler trying to figure things out … nah. We all were high schoolers trying to figure things out, and I never used those sorts of words at that age. Mainly because I was friends with African-Americans that would have immediately and rightfully whipped around in a second to hand my tail to me had I decided to toss words around like that.
As Steven LeBron, who originally found the tweet, points out – one wonders if Green was actually searching for his own name on Twitter, which would be kind of sad. More than likely (and maybe we’re projecting), he was probably alerted to the tweet by someone else, which allowed for the solid burn. It’s an earned burn, by the way; because by some projections the Golden State Warriors are expected to actually “run” the Western Conference this season, while the Lakers could finish last.
Maybe we’re giving the kid too much of the stick. When I was 11 I walked on stage at a live sports radio broadcast prior to opening day in Cincinnati in a Chicago White Sox hat and loudly proclaimed into the mic that the Sox were going to take down the defending champion Cincinnati Reds in some imagined World Series some six months later, to round boos by a bunch of dudes with Doobie Brother jeans and mustaches, so I can understand the hubris.
Then again, he lied about this sort of thing on Twitter and he seems to be kind of an arse in his subsequent defense. You make the call.
Either way, run the ball, Warriors.
