The Royals are playing in their first World Series in three decades right now, and many fans are going to extraordinary lengths to attend games. For Stephanie Hetherington and her husband Jason, that meant attending Game 1 at Kauffman Stadium even though she was nine months pregnant.
Although Stephanie’s due date was a week away, her water broke as the family settled into their seats before the game. “Hopefully she stays in there long enough for us to enjoy the game. Didn’t happen for us though,” she said to KCTV while reflecting back on the game.
Here’s more from KCTV:
“Let’s go grab one last snack and get settled in for the game,” Jason Hetherington said. “By the time we worked our way back to our seat, she was like, ‘I gotta go.'”
…
“I thought I would just labor at the game for a while because I wasn’t really contracting you know? My water just broke,” Stephanie Hetherington said.
But her daughter convinced her to head for the exits.
“I found an usher at the K and said, ‘My wife’s going into labor can we get a ride to our car?’ I think I kind of freaked her out, and I was like ‘No, she’s not going to have it here,'” Jason Hetherington said.
The Hetheringtons were parked outside Arrowhead Stadium, which shares lots with Kauffman Stadium. Thanks to some assistance from the University of Kansas Hospital medical staff at the park, they were able to get to their car and make their way to Liberty Hospital.
The family watched Game 1 from the delivery room. Daughter Ali Frances was born just before midnight Tuesday. Here’s a photo from KCTV:
