When your favorite team’s staring down the barrel of a bad season, it’s important to celebrate whatever reasons you can find to smile, laugh and enjoy the loss-producing chaos as it swirls around you. In the case of the Minnesota Timberwolves — whom we expect to rank as one of the worst teams in the NBA this season after trading away All-Star power forward Kevin Love — that means savoring the flavor of all the dunks likely to be thrown down by rookie skywalkers Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine off passes by point guard Ricky Rubio. But, blessedly, that’s not all it means, thanks to the some wonderfully creative Wolves fans with just the right amount of free time on their hands.

First up, the standout Spanish fan collective TimberTrolls, who have been doing dynamite Wolves-themed work for a while and who have outdone themselves by reimagining the 2014-15 Minnesota roster as the cast of “Beverly Hills 90210,” complete with a full-on opening credits sequence featuring a somewhat surprising 12th man:
Fun fact: five Timberwolves — Ricky Rubio, Shabazz Muhammad, Anthony Bennett, Wiggins and LaVine — were not yet born when “90210” premiered on Oct. 4, 1990. Even more fun fact: Imagining either Ronny Turiaf or Nikola Pekovic as Timber90210’s version of Nat is a really good way to spend a few seconds today.
This, by itself, would make it a pretty good day for fun Timberwolves videos. But thanks to Cosmonot, we’re not done yet. Let’s open up our hearts and let the sun of a brighter future shine in with a little ditty called “Andrew, Savior of the Universe,” shall we?
Pretty catchy! I especially liked that part about never forgetting to invite Pek to the movies. That just seems like good advice for all of us, really.
It’s going to take Wiggins, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, a bit of time to become that “savior,” of course, but I like the way the songwriter put it — Wiggins’ development and the prospect of him becoming the NBA’s next big thing really will be “the eternal guiding light” keeping Wolves fans warm through what’s shaping up to be a season full of “freezing winter nights.” When the mounting losses get you down, Minnesotans, just turn to the TimberTrolls or crank up some Cosmonot, laugh in spite of it all and dream of better days ahead. There are worse ways to make it through a tough year.
