Can you guess which coaches and QBs get the most TV air time?
The Wall Street Journal took it a step further and tried to figure out who gets the most air time during television broadcasts.
We’re used to seeing the sideline shots of demonstrative coaches and star quarterbacks between plays.WSJ watched two full games for each team this season and counted up how many times each coach and quarterback was shown during the broadcast.

If you can’t guess who got the most air time among quarterbacks you’re not even trying hard. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, better known these days for singing “chicken parm you taste so good” in commercials, was the winner. No. 2 wasn’t tough to figure out either. That would be New England Patriots’ Tom Brady. Those two got 31 and 29.5 shots per game, respectively, and nobody else had more than 22.5. But who was third? Future Hall of Famers like the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers or the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees? The face of the NFL’s future, the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck? Nope.
How about Minnesota Vikings rookie Teddy Bridgewater? That’s right, Bridgewater was third at 22.5, which is a bit surprising. Brees was fourth, Luck was fifth, the Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton was sixth and Rodgers was seventh. Last on the list was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Mike Glennon at 5.5. A little more surprising was that tied for the spot above Glennon was the Detroit Lions’ Matthew Stafford, and one would figure he’d get more than eight shots a game just to see what direction he’s wearing his hat.
Coaches are a little tougher to guess, although No. 1 won’t come as any surprise. The camera time winner is the San Francisco 49ers’ Jim Harbaugh, whose sideline demeanor and cheap khakis are a television hit. He gets 45.5 television appearances a week, far more than Manning or Brady. His brother, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, is calmer on the sideline and as a result ranks just 27th on the list. New England’s Bill Belichick (44.5) and the Philadelphia Eagles’ Chip Kelly (44) came in right behind Jim Harbaugh.
The entire list is pretty fascinating, and you’ll stare at it for a while to discover all the nuances. It’s not scientific, with a pretty small sample and all, but it’s another thing to keep in mind while you’re checking out the NFL on Sunday and seeing Jim Harbaugh 45.5 times.
