Reliever’s girlfriend disses Matheny on Twitter
Thanks to Randy Choate’s tenth inning throwing error, the Giants walked off with a win over the Cardinals in Game 3 of the NLCS on Tuesday afternoon (SF 5, STL 4). One inning before Choate literally threw the game away, right-hander Seth Maness retired the Giants on only six pitches in the ninth inning.
Given his low pitch count, Maness presumably had plenty left in the tank for a second inning of work. However, manager Mike Matheny had Choate ready to face the left-handed Brandon Crawford, and Maness’ spot in the lineup led off the top of the tenth. He was lifted for pinch-hitter Peter Bourjos.
Soon after Choate’s walk-off error — just a minute or two later — Maness’ seldom used Twitter account (@Maness_43) blew up with some retweets criticizing Matheny for taking the righty out of the game. Here’s a sample:
The screenshot comes courtesy of Cole Claybourn of Cards Conclave. He passed along this short video showing the retweets did come from Maness’ verified account and not some imposter or parody account:
Claybourn also has a screenshot of a tweet from Maness’ girlfriend, in which she admitted retweeting the criticisms from Seth’s account:
All of the retweets and everything else linking them to Maness’ girlfriend have since been deleted, unsurprisingly. The internet catches everything though, so they are hardly forgotten.
I think it’s great Maness has such a supportive girlfriend. We should all be so lucky. But man, retweeting that sort of stuff from his Twitter account is messed up. This is cringle-worthy and it will lead to awkward conversations in the clubhouse, if nothing else. Hopefully everyone involved can look back on this and laugh one day.
