Raiders’ Rod Streater offers touching tribute to his late mother
Oakland Raiders wide receiver Rod Streater has just lost his mother to breast cancer. But in an Instagram message honoring her, he found strength in tragedy.
Streater broke his foot in the team’s Week 3 game against the New England Patriots, an injury that will sideline Streater until at least Week 11. But while the injury has kept him out of game action, it allowed him to be close to his mother in the final days of her life.
Here’s the complete text of Streater’s message:
“I thank God for the amazing mother he blessed me with. I thought the world was over when I broke my foot but later realized it was a blessing. It allowed me to spend the last days of my mothers life right beside her. Breast cancer may have taken her life, but it will not take away the love she gave, amazing memories, joy, and impact she had on my families lives. I wouldn’t be anything if it wasn’t for my mom. I’ll be strong and promise to live my life in a way that will make you smile. I will never meet someone as amazing as you. Your pain is gone. You whooped cancer! You’re in peace in Heaven. You’re my angel. I love you mom. RIP”
Streater joined the Raiders in 2012 as an undrafted free agent, so he knows something about determination in the face of adversity. He’s been an active presence at many Raiders charitable functions, particularly those dedicated to breast cancer.
