McIlroy off the pace as Kaymer leads PGA Grand Slam
US Open champion Martin Kaymer made an eagle and drove the 10th green to set up a two-putt birdie for a 6-under 65 and a two-shot lead over Masters champion Bubba Watson in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Open and US PGA champion Rory McIlroy wasted a fast start with a pair of three-putt bogeys for a 69. The final round is Tuesday at Port Royal.
Jim Furyk, the alternate at this 36-hole exhibition for the year’s four major champions, was seven shots behind after following his 72.
Kaymer had a two-shot lead over McIlroy approaching the turn. McIlroy fell back with his three-putt bogeys, while Kaymer drove the green on the 355-yard 10th hole that bends to the left. The German dropped only one shot at the par-3 13th.
“I started off very well,” Kaymer said. “The first six or seven holes, they’re not so windy, so I thought, ‘if you can start off with a couple of birdies the first six holes, it would be really nice’. But then I got a big bonus there on seven. It was a very good eight iron that I hit to three or four feet.
“Then I played really consistent. I think it’s important on this kind of grass that you need to hit a lot of fairways. I think that I hit a few today. My putting felt good. I just made one three-putt today. That’s why I made the bogey. But only one bogey is fine. If you make only one bogey on that golf course, you should do fairly okay.”
