Game 3 of ALCS postponed because of rain
Rain in Kansas City has postponed Game 3 of the ALCS. (USATSI)
Game 3 of the ALCS between the Royals and Orioles has been postponed due to rain, Major League Baseball announced Monday afternoon. It has been raining in Kansas City all day and is expected to continue all the way through to Tuesday morning.
The game will be made up on Thursday’s travel day, if necessary. Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s games will be played at scheduled. The weather forecast for the rest of the week in Kansas City is clear. The Royals lead the best-of-seven series 2-0, so if they win Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday’s makeup game won’t be necessary.
Here is the updated series schedule (all games will be broadcast on TBS):
Monday, Oct. 13 – rained out
Tuesday, Oct. 14 – Game 3 at 8 p.m. ET (had been 4pm ET)
Wednesday, Oct. 15 – Game 4 at 4 p.m. ET
Thursday, Oct. 16 – Game 5 at 4 p.m. ET (if necessary)
Friday, Oct. 17 – Game 6 at 8 p.m. ET (if necessary)
Saturday, Oct. 18 – Game 7 at 8 p.m. ET (if necessary)
Because of the rain out, the Royals and Orioles would have to play five games in the next five days if the series goes the distance. They’ll have to either use their fifth starter at some point or start someone on short rest in Game 7. Neither team has announced their rotation plans for the rest of the series. Scheduled Game 3 starters Wei-Yin Chen and Jeremy Guthrie will presumably start Tuesday.
MLB has been quick to postpone postseason games due to rain in recent years after games in the 2008 World Series and 2011 ALDS had to be suspended in the middle innings and resumed at a later date. Game 1 of the ALCS seemed likely to be rained out Friday, but the weather cleared up and the game was played without delay.
