Brian Cashman will continue to serve as Yankees general manager, as the club announced Friday that the two parties have agreed to terms on a three-year contract. Reports in recent weeks have indicated the two sides were working toward an extension, so this doesn’t come as a surprise.
Cashman, 47, has been in his current position since 1998. In his time as GM, the Yankees have been to the World Series six times, winning four of them. They’ve only missed the playoffs three times, but two of those three came in the past two seasons. They haven’t had a losing record in Cashman’s tenure, but the 84-78 record this past season was the worst in Cashman’s stint.
In all, Cashman has been with the organization since 1986, when he started as an intern. He also served as an assistant in baseball operations, assistant farm director and assistant general manager.
Cashman is the third-longest tenured GM with the same team in Major League Baseball behind Brian Sabean (Giants) and Billy Beane (A’s). He’s also the longest tenured Yankees’ GM since Ed Barrow was at the helm from 1920-45.
