Three East Carolina players suspended for firing BB guns near school
College football players (and college students in general), we have a bright idea. Stay the hell away from BB guns.
Less than two weeks after four Kentucky players were suspended for shooting BB guns on campus, three East Carolina players were suspended after they were arrested for firing BB guns within Greenville, N.C., city limits.
LB Yiannis Bowden, WR Curtis Burston and LB Markel Winters, all scout team members, were cited after they were seen Tuesday afternoon firing the BB guns toward the ground from a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon. They were doing it near a school and the sighting caused the school to briefly be locked down.
Discharging a weapon in Greenville city limits is a misdemeanor. The players’ violation was reported by people in the neighborhood and after an investigation, police then discovered the weapons were BB guns. The players were released Tuesday evening.
East Carolina suspended the three indefinitely on Wednesday.
“One of the benchmarks of our program is that our players will be held accountable for their actions on and off the field, in the classroom and in the community,” East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill said in a statement. “It is with this commitment in mind that I have suspended these individuals indefinitely for their actions that were irresponsible and dangerous. They have acknowledged their mistake and now part of our job is to help them learn from this situation.”
Kentucky QB Drew Barker, WR Dorian Baker, DE Tymere Dubose and RB Stanley Williams were charged last week with second-degree disorderly conduct. They were discovered via survelliance footage Sept. 28 on Kentucky’s campus after gunshots on campus were reported.
