Royals fans keep promise to adopt a dog after AL wild-card game victory
A Kansas City Royals fan and her unique sign were all of the talk during this year’s American League wild-card game. Katie Castan, 24, was spotted early in the TBS broadcast holding a sign that read — “If We Win, He’s Buying Me a Puppy!” — in reference to her boyfriend, Joe Onofrio.
Well, the Royals did win, and although they told Yahoo Sports they were going to wait until after the playoffs, Castan did get her puppy.
The couple had been planning to visit KC Pet Project, Kansas City’s municipal animal shelter, over the weekend, but late last week they heard from “a family of wonderful pet owners” who’d been trying to find a new home for the corgi — the breed pictured on her sign.
“Since a corgi is the dog of my dreams, we went to meet her and I immediately fell in love,” reports Castan, 24, of Prairie Village.
The pooch’s name is Lucy, although the couple also favor the name Rally. As in, how the Royals rallied to win that wild-card game, which led to a sweep of the American League Division Series, which leads to the Royals facing Baltimore in the American League Championship Series starting Friday.
It’s probably a good thing Onofrio didn’t agree to buy a puppy for every Royals postseason win. They’d already be a third of the way to a potential dozen. That said, it sounds like they would have had some potential options to fill out their puppy roster.
Castan said many people came forward to help them find a pup: “It was incredibly generous, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”
Well played by everyone. Congratulations to the couple for finding the perfect companion, and congratulations to “Rally” for finding a good home.
Also, congratulations to this other Royals fan, who somehow managed to wiggle out of these responsibilities.
