Giants fans put wedding festivities on hold until NLDS Game 2 marathon ended
It turns out the longest playoff game in MLB history may have led to the longest delay in the history of all weddings.
A couple made up of two die-hard San Francisco Giants fans put their wedding festivities on pause Saturday evening, refusing to proceed with the traditional cutting of the cake until Game 2 of the NLDS between Giants and the Washington Nationals finally reached its conclusion.
The groom, Chasen Orozon, and his bride, Courtney, arranged a Giants-themed wedding which happened to coincide with San Francisco’s NLDS game in Washington. Obviously, the latter part couldn’t have been planned, but that’s how it worked out.
The couple exchanged nuptials as planned. However, the Giants staged a two-out ninth-inning rally just as they were preparing to move forward with many of the usual post-wedding activities. Fully aware of what was going on in Washington, the newlyweds, for better or worse, made the decision to delay the cake-cutting until the game ended. After all, how long could the game really go on, right?
Literally all night, it turns out, as both bullpens traded zeroes for almost another full game.
Finally, in the 18th inning, nearly three hours later, Brandon Belt connected on a solo home run to put San Francisco ahead. Minutes after that, the clock struck midnight in Washington (and 9 p.m. ET in California, where the wedding took place) as rookie Hunter Strickland recorded his first career save, giving the Giant 2-1 win and at the time a 2-0 series lead.
Then it was time for cake, and fortunately for the couple they had another reason to celebrate.
To the happy couple, that’s a fairy tale wedding if there ever was one.
As for the guests, well, hats off to those who went along with it and were patient. For some, it was probably a bit awkward, but at least they know they were part of a memorable event.
